Doma Vaquera

visit www.domavaquera.info for more info.

Doma Vaquera is one of the styles of equitation in Spain, another being Doma Clasica (classical equitation).

Doma Vaquera is a style of horse riding which enables the rider to carry out daily duties on horseback on a working cattle ranch and grew out of decades of daily work with cattle in the open countryside.

The style of riding, tack, dress and discipline of the working horses evolved into what we see today. It is still being used on working ranches, in Doma Vaquera competition and more recently, Doma de Trabajo (working equitation)
.

Doma Vaquera in Competition
Modern Doma Vaquera competitions provide a challenging test for both the horse and rider. At advanced level, they are performed in a 60mx20m arena, with explosive gallops from a standing start, skid stops, canter pirouettes and spins are a few of the demands of these tests.

Fantasia a la garrocha.
The garrocha is a long pole which is still used today for controlling herds of cattle and testing bulls whilst on horseback on working ranches in Spain.

It is also used in artistic displays of horsemanship to music. It is a truly moving experience to see this equestrian artform performed by the top riders in Spain who often achieve standing ovations with cries of "Bravo! Bravo!" for the entertainment that they provide.

In the tests with the leaf of exercises 1A, if false reins were used, these will go to the farolillos of the mouthful.

THE MOVEMENTS

The Step

1. - We observed with preoccupation like most of the horses at the moment in competition, they do not have a good step, they are generally faltos of impulsion, cadence and hardly they reach the tracks of the later ones to those of the previous ones.

2. - The step is a fundamental air of Cattle Doma. The horse must go rhythmic moving the mosquero with impulsion and franqueza. It is necessary to demand of the rider who shows the Jury without haste, as it walks his mount, in the air line as in circle as much. Hardly a horse that walks bad, will be able to make the rest of the exercises to the passage of a correct form and therefore, it will be almost impossible to him to obtain a note superior to which we have granted in its step. In this note we must differentiate clearly those horses that walk to the cattle tender of that they are incapable to adopt this characteristic air in our taming, with correction.

The circles

1. - The circles to the step are made without describing in most of the cases, a complete circle, without can be appraised neither the regularity of the big steps, nor its incurvación nor the dominion of the rider, who must mark a concrete way to cross by the horse.

Supports

1. - The supports suffer like other works at the present moment of a bad interpretation of which they must be the fundamental aids of the reins, falling some in forced and exaggerated incurvaciones.

Passages of flank

1. - The flank passages have been different in the Regulation to be air characteristic of our taming and in her it is not necessary for a correct execution, that the horse must advance. As much in this air as the supports, one will value the changes and contracambios positively.

Piruetas

1. - Piruetas direct and inverse, will be done starting off of a straight line. The horses describe a complete circumference, starting off in the same direction in which the exercise began. From this form, one will be different clearly to the riders who make it, from those others that initiating a passage of flank or a support, end up taking advantage of the refusal the horse to execute it to end up making a pirueta.

Average returns

1. - The average returns on the legs to the step are a classic air that unfortunately rare time we observed made with a minimum degree of correction. In this note also we will have to establish remarkable differences according to the good one or bad execution, penalizing those horses that initiate the exercise turning all their extremities and single at the end of the turn elevate the previous third. It never must of have stopped intermediate or inmovilidad

One step back

1. - These will be made with rectitud and they will occur as minimum six steps backwards and in the exit at least six big steps occur forwards, and not as we see sometimes, a single big step and part to galope or in passages of flank.

 2. - The one step backs with exit to the step and in attack to both hands will be made with continuity, without intermediate times nor galopes throughout the track to temper the horse.

Galope

1. - Galope as much short as of work and length, will be cadenciado with impulsion and franqueza. We carefully observed those horses that galopan without the cattle balance, outside the mass and those that preveyendo any later effort, galopan on the hands. Like in the step, the rider will show the Jury, with clarity during the sufficient time, the kindness and quality of his mount.

2. - We will make the same consideration that we did previously, is necessary to differentiate clearly with our notes the difference between good or bad galope cattle tender. Badly galope prevents to make a good exercise that includes east air in its execution.

3. - The supports to galope suffer sometimes from excessive incurvaciones and as we developed later, of badly a use of the aids and the reins.

Change of foot

1. - The changes of foot by right, constitute a secondary air, an adornment air, like unquestionable technical difficulty in which besides to value its correct execution, his will be valued positively mechanical nonaccomplishment, that is to say, the changes in which vary the number of big steps that the rider demands to his mount.

Trocado

1. - Galope trocado part of an air line or from within of the circle. It does not have to be allowed that this it comes from a support. The exposed thing will be applied to him in its note on the exigency of a position to begin with forced. We observed as in this air a use is also made badly of the rein and the position of the hand that sustains it. To return and to turn around 1. - In the average returns and turning around on the legs, the horse must start off of galope of frank work on the air line with impulsion without there is a previous preparation as unfortunately we observed more and more. The horse must remeter its later ones, be placed underneath the mass and elevating its previous ones, make a 180 turn of º or a complete circle leaving with impulsion and at the same hand in which it initiated the exercise. It never must of have stopped intermediate or inmovilidad. Returns In the returns on the legs part generally of galope very short. Some move grupa on a circle that is closed until making a return on the legs that resembles more a classic pirueta badly interpreted that to a return on the legs with cattle air. This is one of the exercises in which the judges have to make a very clear distinction with their notes in the correction or not of the exercise. To urge on To urge on, to warm up to double and to urge on at both hands. This he is one of the exercises characteristic of our Taming. Urging on is not as we see simple galope frequently long. The horse leaves with force, extends its neck and uses its force to develop galope energetic in a short space. The rider tempers it, doubles and returns to urge on making one Or without the rider between both arreones uses no artifice to temper it until arreón finalizes the second. It is a movement in which the present riders take risk less and less falseando it and turning it many cases in simple galope long together with an ample turn by the track. One will fundamentally value by the Judge the risk that the rider in his accomplishment assumes and the air to which he executes it.

To stop to ray

1. - To urge on and to stop to ray. Many of the present horses when they urge on having a feeling the shutdown to ray advance to the rider: he is to say galopan on the hands and the rider must surprise being made them east exercise in many cases without the franqueza, the force nor on galope the sufficiently energetic thing. In this exercise the horse exhibits lack of submission generally. Stopping to ray must be the shutdown of arreón and it is not the shutdown by surprise, of simple galope long. The one step back with exit to the step (and in attack) will be made at both hands as it indicates the Regulation positively valuing itself the impulsion and the force with which the horse starts off for ahead looking for galope.

2. - The final shutdown must of being in front of the President of the Jury in inmovilidad. Most of the horses they do not observe this last point nor the rider places them of suitable form. The Judges will distinguish in their qualifications to which finishing the exercise they are able to relax to the horse being conserved mobility and leaving from the track to the step, conserving the cadence of this one, without never breaking away from the enemy with him.

Notes of coniunto

1. - In set notes on the submission is insisted, fundamental characteristic of this Doma. The obedience immediate of the horse to the aids of the rider whatever it is the exigency degree and for that reason in this note was valued with clear differences of score, to those horses that demonstrate to this quality throughout the exercise considering the difficulty chosen and imposed by the rider in the accomplishment of the test.

2. - Commenting it completes note, we see with preoccupation since one has weakened totally in some riders the use of the reins and the form to take them, as it has been described in I complete paragraph of Art. 9.

3. - This is the very serious defect that we observed in many riders who trying to incurvar the horse, modify the seats of the mouthful, falsean the aid of the rein and substantially weaken the form to mount of Cattle Doma.

4. - This defect will consider and will penalize in all the exercises which it is incurred him and in the last note of the set.
